Week 29-Holladay, UT

On Christmas Day! Lots of snow in Utah!

Had dinner on Christmas and skyped at this family's house

Another family we had dinner with this week
I don't have a lot of time so there may be quite a few mistakes. First of all, Merry Christmas!! Second of all, It is been a slow but crazy week!

We had an amazing Christmas! I loved it. We each saved one package for Christmas morning and opened it! Thanks Mom for the acne cream....haha It was so nice to see family and enjoy the company of some awesome members here for Christmas. I had kind of a cool experience for Christmas Eve! Our mission was invited to listen to an evening of Christmas music! There the lights were dimmed and soft quiet and peaceful music was played. It was a wonderful time for reflection. I thought about my experiences so far that I've had on my mission. I thought about the people I was working with now and in the past. I thought about how I was progressing and what I've accomplished. I thought about my Savior and all that he has come to mean to me. As I was pondering this, my mind and my heart were filled with peace. I felt like I had accomplished something and God was proud of what I had done. I felt like I was on a higher plane of thought and was able to see things clearly. I felt a great love for my first companion who recently went home early. I wished I could give him a big hug and tell him to come back. That he still had things to do and accomplish. That God loved him and that this experience would be life changing if he let it!

Anyways kind of another crazy story. Robert was baptized this weekend and was not confirmed. Hopefully he will be confirmed sometime this week or next weekend. I've never tried so hard and struggled so much for a baptism. After his interview with the zone leaders, he disappeared. We called him so many times and texted him more! We stopped by his house so many times and banged on his door. It was the morning of when he was supposed to be baptized before we knocked on his door, we decided to say a prayer. We said that we have done all we can and now it was in his hands if Robert was supposed to be baptized today. We closed the prayer. Knocked on the door. No answer. We hear footsteps running up the stairs and it was ROBERT! He had forgot something and was running in to grab it. He only would have been there for a minute or so. The timing was amazing and inspired. There was now no doubt God wanted him to be baptized. He later was baptized and the next day didn't show for the confirmation. He'll come this next week. I love that we can rely on the Lord to do his work. It was definitely a testimony builder of the power of prayer. We said a prayer to be able to find Robert and he came running up to us a minute later. We had no contact with him in like four days.

Well, Merry Christmas I've loved the time I've been able to spend in Holladay! The members are kind and amazing! Thank you for your love and support you inspire me to press on! Love you all

-Elder Bass

Later Notes: Brandons baptism was definitely a miracle. He just moved in and had been taught everything. He was on his way to get married by another bishop when i had met him first. We just had his interview and he got baptized.

We had lunch with Elder Christiansen an emeritus member of the presidency of the seventy. He invited someone to his home to be taught. Elder Thompson and I went. The woman that he invited brought a friend with them. He was very well versed on anti doctrine. Most of the lunch was the brother and Elder Christiansen talking to each other. I remember a long discussion and lecture on the priesthood by Elder Christiansen. At one point during the conversation, he turned to elder Thompson and I and said that we would be great leaders in the church. He said that we would be great examples for others to follow. We would also be great missionaries. He said that we would get married and have wonderful families. Later when i got home from my mission, my father gave me a book for RMs which Elder Christiansen wrote.

Week 28-Holladay, UT

Haruma and his son at the baptism
Okay, this has been a super crazy week. Serving in Salt Lake is like a completely different mission! There is so many problems here. Drugs are rampant and everywhere. I feel like in Rock Springs we didn't deal with those people who struggled with that kind of stuff. I would venture to say that about half of our teaching pool have hard-core drug problems. I never really realized in high school how much that drugs can completely destroy your life. It is very upsetting to walk into broken homes. Parents who may not even care about their kids just about their next usage of drugs and how they will get it. That is all the kids grow up knowing. They are lost and confused with life. There is nothing to hold their families together and so a lot of times they end up hating each other and betraying each other for drugs. A bright positive for working in Salt Lake is the members! I always thought never really cared for "Utah Mormons" , but they actually are some of the most loving and supportive people I've ever met. They are so kind and will go out of their way to do almost anything for us. We have so many places to stop by on Christmas. There are some amazing member missionary families! We have seen the work pick up immensely while we have been here. Looking through our area book this morning, this was a dreaded area. There have only been 3 baptisms in the stake ALL year! I will talk about a few cool stories that happened this week!

We recently met a family from the Congo! They are living with a recent convert from the Congo. He introduced them to us and we taught them the first lesson! They want to be baptized. We invited them to a baptism this past Saturday. They said that they didn't have a car but would walk. We were like ok! Driving to the baptism, we saw them walking and they were going the wrong way! We pulled over and since we can't take them in our car we walked with them the rest of the way to the baptism. I have yet to meet Haruma's family but from what he says they all want to be baptized. Yesterday, a member picked up Haruma for church! He is about 5'2 and super funny! He can only speak broken English and his native language is Swahili. He said that if we taught him the gospel he would teach us Swahili! We were like deal! So he teaches us a lot of Swahili words! It is amazing to see all the nationalities that are in Salt Lake! I absolutely love Africans!

Another kind of crazy experience we had this week was with one of our investigators named Andrew. Andrew has done a lot of bad things in his life. His story is while he was in jail this previous time, his cell mate introduced him to the Book of Mormon. He said at first he thought his cell mate was crazy. He just talked to him about it to keep conversation in the cell. He ended up reading it and loved it. He found peace when reading it that he couldn't find anywhere else and he knew it was true! Anyways he got out of prison and wanted to be baptized. He had memorized all these scriptures and verses that were powerful to him and he'd quote them. All of his family is non members and so we organized a lesson at temple square with his family. We couldn't get in contact with them and couldn't find them at Temple Square. We stopped by their house afterwards and we saw Curtis, his brother. He said he didn't know where Andrew was and he said he wanted to go but Andrew just disappeared. We stopped by the next night. Curtis came to the door and said he couldn't believe what happened. He let us in and he was beat up. His face was bruised, his arm was broken, and he had cuts on his face and his body. The house was destroyed. They had an inch thick marble table that was broken in half. Everything was trashed. He told us what happened. Andrew is an alcoholic and came back drunk. He was making fun of Curtis and then things got heated. Curtis wouldn't punch him. They fought and and Andrew ended up grabbing a knife. Curtis called the cops and Andrew is now back in jail. Curtis then started crying saying that he had tried to live life the right way. He had a job and earned money the right way and watched his family steal. He started working when he was 12 to support his family. Andrew in his rage destroyed the TV that he had bought and the play station. Andrew tore up the only family picture that they had before their brothers death a few nights previously. Curtis said he thought about killing himself. He was tired of doing things for other people and trying to hold his family together because it just wasn't working. He said he felt so empty inside and didn't know what to do. In a nutshell, we promised him that he would get what he was looking for if he read the Book of Mormon. We said that we cared about him and that the Savior's arms were always outstretched for him. We promised him that if he listened and acted upon our message he would be filled and his family situation would eventually work out.

We also had a devotional by Elder Holland. I got to meet him and shake his hand. He is a very passionate speaker. I thought that he would chastise our mission but he said he was very pleased with what he saw. He said that our president had a good mission. So I was pretty happy about that!

Honestly that is only brushing the surface of what happened this week. I love this mission. I love the diversity of people here. I love my Savior and I am honored to serve him! Thank you for your love and support it is appreciated.

-Elder Bass

Later Notes: I loved being with Elder Thompson. He was passionate and dedicated. Each companion taught me something. Elder Thompson the importance of being passionate about the gospel and taught me to be more social and how being more social can make me a more effective missionary and also help me make a bigger difference in the world. He also gave me a desire to make a difference in the world. I was impressed with his plans and his expectations to change the world.

I remember we walked out of a lesson one of our first nights together. I was like dang you're a good teacher. He said yeah you too. I said that it was going to be an awesome transfer.

I gave a blessing to a man in the hospital that had an profound effect on me and strengthened my testimony of the priesthood authority. I said in my journal:"It is crazy that God give that authority to people like me." I said that i felt the spirit before and after the blessing.

Throughout my time in Valley View, we would find out all the time about girls thinking we were cute. All of the young women would always act weird and awkward around us. We made sure not to flirt with any of the girls.

Week 27-Holladay, UT

Zone conference picture with my new companion, Elder Thompson

Another zone conference pic

I cover the Valley View Stake in Holladay now. It was really awesome being able to see Brother and Sister Tennyson and it was sad to see Sister Tennyson leave. It has been a very big shift for me. Rock Springs was an amazing area and Elder Hanks just emailed me and said that another girl I was working with was baptized. It is really cool. In Rock Springs, they should have baptisms for the next four weeks! I can't wait to go back and visit.

Salt Lake is like an entirely different mission. First of all, its kinda crazy covering a whole stake! I don't think that I will be able to get to know the members as well as I did in my last area though. There is some great people here! They absolutely spoil us! Everyone is doing things for us and leaving us gifts and writing things to us. It is great. My new companion is Elder Thompson from Texas. He has only been out three months, so he just barely got done with training. He is an awesome missionary. We can teach really well together. He is in reality training me how to be a missionary in Salt Lake. Each ward has like a 2 block map of their area. On the map, the names of all the member and non members are written. First impressions are critical and with a lot of these people you only get one chance to make it or brake it. All the non members have a set view of the church and almost always it is a negative one. I actually came into this area on the verge of explosion. This past week we were able to set a date for baptism for 4 of the investigators. I am so happy and honored that God has entrusted me with this area. Elder Thompson and i get along really well together and we are able to do a lot each day. I am already starting to love the area.

Having a district is tough. I don't like giving trainings and having more people to worry about. My district is awesome though. There are some great missionaries in my district. The district is on the verge of having a lot of success in a tough area which is really awesome! I'm always tired and my time is getting more and more limited but my joy has been very full! I love participating in Gods work of salvation. I think the most amazing part of missionary work is doing your part and then watching God do His. Then seeing how little you actually do!

I guess a miracle this week is there is a group of skater kids who run around and terrorize people. The missionaries in the area have always hated them. Recently we started talking to them. We had a lesson with them in the Church. We are starting to have BoM readings with them every Thursday. We commit them to invite their friends to the lessons and gave them BoMs. Most of them are non members which is unheard of. We also talk to a group of girls the same age. They said the guys were all gathered around reading the BoM at school one morning. Its just kinda cool to hear about that stuff.

Anyways I love you all and thank you so much for the letters! I wasn't able to reply today but I will the following week!

-Elder Bass

Later Notes: I remember thinking on my way from Rock Springs to Salt Lake that the baptisms and success i would have would significantly decrease when i went to Salt Lake because i thought everyone was Mormon. Little did i know that i would baptize more in a shorter time than in Rock Springs.

I remember being called as a district leader. When i got the call, i had a lot of trouble sleeping that night. I was thinking of all the things that i could do to faithfully fulfill my calling.

Baptism in Rock Springs,Wyoming of a girl I taught

Week 26-Rock Springs, WY

I don't have much time so I will just give you an update on the main stuff! Edna was baptized. Edna is the picture I sent you. She had an amazing baptism. She was in tears after her confirmation. She brought her friends and we will be teaching one of them. Her name is Sandra and possibly another one who is named Mamado. Tomorrow I will be transferred some where else though. Last night, I was called into leadership which will be tough because there will be a lot more on my plate. I was up a lot of the night thinking about that. I don't feel ready, but I know God will help me. I feel I have fulfilled my purpose in Rock Springs. I have seen some of the fruits of my labors and it is very joyous. I have seen the light the Gospel can bring to a life and a family. There will be many here who I will come back and visit. I would love for you to meet those I've worked with. All in all, i am happy and content to leave. I feel like I have done a good work here. It is an amazing feeling. I love you all sorry my email will be better next week. Thanks.
Elder Bass

Later Notes: At the baptismal service there was a few of her friends. It was good. At the end, we asked if some of them would meet with us. One named Sandra said that she would. Elder Hanks and Is last lesson we put Sandra on date before she left back to brazil. She didnt end up getting baptized here but im sure she probably got baptized in South America where she went.

I was always annoyed with Elder Wilson. He always seemed self righteous. There was one experience he had where he prayed and asked god if the district needed anything. He felt prompted to call sister Tennyson. She said that in her prayer that morning she had said if she needed a blessing have her District Leader contact her. I remember that left quite the impression on me.

When i reflect back on my experiences of Rock Springs i am very proud of them.

Week 25-Rock Springs, WY

The calendar was very thoughtful Mom thank you! It will definitely lift my spirits and probably make me miss you guys :(

This week I don't have too many stories! It seems as though everyone goes to Salt Lake for Thanksgiving! Few people stay for Thanksgiving. In the white handbook, we are instructed to spend as much time proselyting as possible on weekends and holidays. Since no one was here for Thanksgiving normally we plan for the week on Thursdays. We decided to pray and ask God what we should do. We felt like we should walk. So we went out and saw a member family walking and they dragged us into their home! We shared a message with them and continued on our way to our first of two dinner appointments. While we were walking, there was a man cleaning his side of the street gutters. He started talking to us and we had a nice conversation. During our conversation, He mentioned that he had Mormon neighbors that moved that he really appreciated. He said that we were free to stop by! God literally put him in our path the exact time that we would walk by! Truly we are blessed for keeping the commandments of the Lord whether we understand why or think that it may be illogical and not apply to our situation. It does, so just do it and open the windows of heaven for our Heavenly Father to bless you.

Speaking of the white handbook, we recently have been striving to be exactly obedient. During studies one morning, we decided to go through and anything that we were not doing or had to rationalize we wrote down on a list. Elder Hanks and I thought we were both pretty obedient but we counted over 40 things that we had to work on or fix! It's pretty amazing how much we have to work on! Our goal is to be exactly obedient by the end of this transfer which is DEC 9! Hopefully we can make it! Already we are seeing an outpouring of the spirit in our lessons and even as we walk or drive from place to place. I know the Lord is pleased with our efforts. However small they might be compared to what he does for us.

We had the privilege of holding Mark's baptism this week. He is 11 and he is a stud. He wants to be a missionary and says he wants to help other people the way that we've helped him. It was really awesome to hear him say that. His fellow-shippers and his parents figured out if they each saved $15 a month from now until he was 18, they would have enough! He will be an amazing missionary! His baptism was amazing and spirit-filled! I'm so happy I've gotten the privilege to have known him!

Edna's baptism will be this coming week. We are planning to have the service completely in her native language of Portuguese! We found people in the ward who speak her language and asked them to participate in the program. It will be really amazing and we won't even understand a word that is spoken! I feel like my chapter of service in Rock Springs is coming to a close. This will be an epic conclusion for that service!! The Lord has blessed us so very much! We have baptisms for those we are teaching for each of the next four weeks and probably more to follow by transfers. We've lined up dinners with all of our favorite families this week! It is amazing to see God's work hastening.

I love you all so much and am so very grateful for your love and support!

-Elder Bass

Later Notes: We had a lesson with nyes. This lesson we testified boldly of priesthood authority and that he would need to be baptized again for it to truly count. He got upset about that and said that he wasnt interested. I remember that all of a sudden he got super dark and closed off. He didnt talk much the rest of the lesson. We closed with a prayer and tried to leave on good terms

Week 24-Rock Springs, WY

It has been a pretty good week! I have definitely experienced the ups and downs of missionary life this past week!

The first half of the week I was on exchanges with Elder Vause. He is fairly reserved and its kind cool that we both are planning to be mechanical engineers and to study at BYU. We always see miracles on exchanges which is one of the reasons I love going on exchanges. It is a good way to see someone else's teaching style and different things that they do that make them good missionaries. Even what you would call the bad missionaries have good qualities that can be learned from. We are teaching some one who is called Melissa Watson. She has had an extremely rough life. She currently has 3 x-husbands and I'm pretty sure had kids with each of them. She is also married to another guy now who a week ago kicked her out of the house. She is living with some neighbors right now and who knows what will happen from there. She has bone cancer and going through chemo. She also has to work so she can be supported. She was baptized when she was young and her immediate family has been inactive ever since. We are now just teaching her the basic of the gospel. Anyways, she said the we could come and teach her at her friends house this past week. So we went and towards the end of the lesson her friend walked in and sat in on some of it. At the conclusion, she asked for a Book of Mormon. We will be teaching her the discussions this week. It was definitely a miracle of God putting someone in our path!

Another cool experience happened after district meeting when we went to Cafe Rio for lunch as a district. Before we walked in a lady stopped us and said that she had been inactive for a long time and she wanted us to come over. We stopped by and the husband and the daughter haven't been baptized yet. Another instance where God has given us people to teach. She is married to someone and living with another guy. They would have gotten divorced but they are fighting over custody of the children. They are an amazing family and I am excited to be able to meet them and teach them.

There were some rough patches this week. When Lisa and her family didn't come to church after we called and left a message, texted them three times, and dropped by their house before church, it was kinda disappointing. Also another one of our investigators moved the date for her baptism way back because of family logistics. I may not be able see her be baptized now.

The highlight of my week was probably the baptism of Rick and Sharon Youngblood! They were married and baptized the same day! So it was pretty eventful for them. It was pretty stressful getting it all organized but it was well worth it. Their confirmations were yesterday and I had the privilege of confirming Rick a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They had been waiting for this for a long time. Working through divorce papers and so forth. They had been taking discussions with missionaries for years! I have worked with them the past six months so it was amazing to see them progress towards baptism! At one point during the meeting yesterday, I looked over to see them in tears. Sharon kept saying" isnt this such a wonderful service!" I knew without a doubt that God had made all the effort they gave to coming closer to Christ worth it for them. My whole being was filled with so much joy.

I am so very grateful for my family and friends and all their support. I am grateful for the people that I've been able to meet and develop relationships with here. Most importantly I'm grateful for my Father in Heaven's love for me and the many ways he expresses it!

-Elder Bass

Later Notes: We met a family called the  Millers. The first lesson we invited them to be baptized and they accepted a date. They lived in trailers that were way out in our area.

Rosy was their 17 year old daughter. One particular lesson that we had with them was good. We taught them the Law of Chastity. She followed as out to the car when we were leaving. Throughout the whole lesson she kept saying,"I like one of you more than the other." I thought she was talking about me the whole lesson. When she walked us out, she said. I have something to ask you. With the law of chastity are you allowed to date? I said yeah how are you going to get married if you dont date. She laughed and said you you guys allowed to date? I said oh no no we cant. She said she could wait. I immediately shut her down because i thought she was talking to me. She then said oh well i was going to ask him (pointing to Elder Hanks) to be my boyfriend. I just about bursted out laughing. I waited til the car and i just started laughing uncontrollably for like 5 min. While we were driving back her got super scared and said that he was going to get ETed. We called the zone leaders and they said not to worry about it.

Rosy had problems with cutting herself. She told us a few times.

Elder Hanks was always uncomfortable around the millers and didnt want to go to their house ever. They were a little weird in his defense. He yelled at us over the phone and said that the church was inconsiderate and not helping him. We prayed and asked God what to do. I felt like we should go to his house. Elder Hanks thought that was absurd. After many personal prayers, he decided to go. He didnt understand why the bishop wasnt helping him. He was afraid to pay tithing because of his bills. I promised him that God would take care of him if he payed his tithing first. It turned out to be a spiritual experience when we decided to go there.

For thanksgiving dinner we went to a mans house who was later baptized when i was a zone leader in Wyoming. Then he died a little bit later. At the dinner i was super upset because I didnt get to sit at the same table as sister tennyson. That was childish thing to get upset about. One thing that even in the smallest insignificant ways hurts me is when someone i feel close to chooses someone else over me. Elders Wilson and Martineau sat with them and we sat alone.

I remember that we got chastised for texting the Sisters. I was upset about it at the time but looking back it was a rule and i was dumb.

Week 23-Rocks Springs, WY

I had an amazing birthday! We were teaching lessons all day and found 4 new investigators! The sisters also surprised me with a cake! Still pretty stressed because we will be having baptisms for the next few weeks! This week's baptism is a family called the Youngbloods. They are an older couple. Maybe 40-50s. When we began teaching them she was married to another guy and not the one she was living with. They had been living together for almost 20 years! The divorce process was long and treacherous and it took them almost 6 months to figure it out and get it finalized, but they are getting baptized and married this weekend! It will be an amazing day.

We have been to the hospital several times this week giving those who are sick blessings. Those are always very hard because you dont know anything about them! In one of the blessing, I felt like she would return home safely that night. I kinda wonder what happened. One of the guys we gave a blessing to suddenly had his pancreas burst. It s scary how fragile life is and how these things can just sneak up on us and come out of no where. If nothing else it was a call to make the most out of our time that we've been given.

Our high councilman let us know yesterday morning that we were going to talk in church in just a few hours. Elder Hanks got up and I zoned out and started thinking about my talk. It felt like 3 or 4 minutes later he said "in conclusion". I looked at the clock and he had talked for 4 minutes and sat down. So I said a silent prayer. I had a few bullet points I wanted to speak on and I just kinda said whatever came to mind. I didn't even look at the clock and I had spoken when I was done the perfect amount of time. God really does make up the rest when we give him what we have.

I have really tried lately to measure my success by obedience and diligence and tried to forget everything else. I like that way a lot better and I really think that it is appropriate. It will help me change and will enable God to help others change through me.

Elder Hanks got asked out a few days ago! That was pretty funny. I thought she was going to ask me but she asked Elder Hanks instead. It was after a lesson with a family in which we taught the law of Chastity. At its conclusion she asked to walk us out to our car. We thought she wanted to talk about a concern that she had when her family wasn't there. So we were like OK. She asked us if the law of Chastity prohibited dating! I asked her how were we supposed to get married without dating! She proceeded to ask Elder Hanks out! It might have been the funniest day of my life! I contained myself for the moment miraculously. I thought she was talking about me at first but then I realized it was Elder Hanks. It went from really awkward and uncomfortable to hilarious!

Anyways thats all! Thank you all for the love and support! It is appreciated and I really do try to return it!
Oh yeah its freezing here. The wind chill was -40 at one point. You can't stay outside for very long or it hurts to breathe and you die. It's snowed so much and been so cold. The cold is like nothing I've ever experienced. It's biting and cuts to the bone.

Week 22-Rocks Spring, WY

Thank you so much for the package! It was awesome!!! I love the sweaters especially the sweater vest! I'm going to wear them all the time!!! Thank you for the letters in the package. They will mean a lot to me. I am going to try to write all of those back who wrote me letters. Did dad ever receive my card that i wrote him? Just wondering. I don't have too much to talk about this week so I'm sorry about that.

I am so happy to be here. I know that it sounds so redundant but I love it. People come to Rock Springs and just find themselves lost. There is some real truth to that. We found another family who are preparing to come unto Christ by means of baptism! A mom, a dad, and a daughter! They are in a super tight financial situation. It was a touching experience. He recently contracted a illness that stopped him from working. His life was normal and everything was fine until he got sick and was no longer able to work. They still have bills to pay and mouths to feed with no income. We were able to get the Relief Society involved to help them with food. The timing was miraculous. I know that this is the Lord's work and I am grateful to be a part of it.
On splits this past Wednesday, it was cool because the guy I was with knew one of the referrals that we needed to contact and he said we could come back! It was a testament to me that when the members get to participate in the work too, we see miracles from it! Go on splits with the Elders and watch how you can be an instrument in the Lord's hands!

We taught Edna a lesson last night! She brought a friend and now we are going to probably start teaching him. Edna is amazing! She wants to move her baptismal date up and meet with us more. She feels so happy at church and she loved the primary program yesterday! Her daughter Dianca got to be part of it! Dianca was all dressed up and she did her part so well! I really enjoyed all three of the primary programs we were able to go to! It's so amazing and touching when they sing. We are building good relationships with ward members so its nice to see all of them at church! We have been super stressed out lately. It is really hard to make sure all of our investigators are doing well and progressing. I loved the package and I'm so grateful that I got it! I love the sweaters!!!
Our leaders gave us permission to go to a BMX event! It was super fun to see those we are teaching go on the track! They were super happy so see us. It was really cool how it worked out. We sat near a someone who we may stop by and start teaching! The Lord always has things for us to do! I am trying to to be more kind and charitable and just a better person in general. Thank you all for the love and support it is very much appreciated.
-Elder Bass

Later notes: On my birthday we had the weird urge to visit a LA named Shanelle. It was someone Elder Clark visited and flirted with a lot. It was how we taught Justin and baptized him. She was there and there was 4 people that had moved in with her. We shared part of the restoration with them right there. It was a wonderful blessing for my birthday. The man was named Irish. Later he had a baptismal date. He dropped off after some disobedient missionaries came and taught him and destroyed the area and got it shut down. When the area got shutdown, they destroyed the maps and the records of all the people i taught.

Everyone of my first baptisms i remember kneeling in the prayer and offering a prayer of gratitude to God of a soul that has been given to us to baptize.

PS Tell Jarem that I loved his card and I miss him!

Week 21-Rock Springs, WY

There really isn't too much to talk about this week. The most eventful thing this week was how God answered our fasting prayer. One of our wards has been struggling a lot. We have one investigator in that ward. Anyway this week we fasted for that ward and asked  members to fast for missionary work as well. Recently, we have received 8 referrals for that ward which is amazing!

There is also a pretty cool thing that happened. We have recently been trying to visit Margaret Parry. We stopped by many times before she was finally home and we were finally able to talk to her. Anyways, we shared a message and a prayer with her and asked her if there was any service we could provide. She chuckled and said that she runs the "cowboys for cancer" event. It is a huge cancer donation event. It was really cool because Evan (one of the people we have taught) may not be alive today if it wasn't for the money donated by this event. People from all over the nation come including dignitaries from the state of WY and other places! We were able to volunteer and help her set up for this event. She said that she could use as many missionaries as we could get. We recruited the other 6 missionaries who work in Rock Springs to come with us. We went and helped and didn't think much about it afterwards. Yesterday in sacrament meeting in one of our wards, someone came up to us and told us this story. At the event, she was saying thanks to people who had helped put on this production. She had been going through a list of those who had helped. When she said our names she stopped and told a story of how we had come to the door and asked for service. She said that she wasn't expecting us to show up because a lot of things like that are mostly just talk. The room was dead silent. She said that not only did we show up but we brought 6 others with us to come and help! She said that she greatly appreciated our support. The crowd started applauding. It started in the back but then filled the entire place. She had to stop talking to wait for the applause to stop. The purpose of this story is not to say how awesome we are or something to that extent. This is a testament that this is truly the Lord's work and how he has opened doors that we didnt even know were in the play to progress his work. I believe there were almost 1000 people in the audience. It is amazing to see the Lord do his work.

God also has given us another family. They just decided to come to church on their own. They have a 9-year-old who has not been baptized. They are a super nice family and really fun and sincere at the same time. I am super excited to begin working with them. We now have 10 people we are working with who are preparing to come unto Christ by means of baptism. The work is starting to pick up in the other wards and we are very excited. The Lord has blessed us abundantly. I love you all and am very grateful for your love and support.

Later Notes: We had an intense lesson with the shassets family. They were willing to meet with us. They seemed to have all the right feelings and motives and desires but lacked commitment in following through. I promised the mother who is the only non member in the family, that if she read and prayed every night for 7 days that she would receive an answer. Unfortunatley she agreed but didnt follow through. It was a good moment in my mission where i testified that this was truly the most thing that they could be doing after they said they were busy.

Here is the article for Cowboys for cancer:

ROCK SPRINGS – Take a walk down memory lane. Remember the fun times, the hard times and the loved ones lost along the way. For Cowboys Against Cancer, Saturday night was a night to reflect over the past 20 years.
The annual Cowboys Against Cancer event celebrated 20 years on Saturday night at the Sweetwater Events Complex. Over the past 20 years, the organization has given $4 million to local residents who are battling cancer.
Each year, the event honors and remembers those who have battled the horrible disease. For the event founder Margaret Parry, Saturday’s dedication was special as one of the people honored was her father Richard McClammy.
Richard and his wife Mary Lou are regular attendees to the event but this year that all changed as Richard was diagnosed with terminal cancer. In 2010, Richard told the audience how proud everyone should be because Cowboys Against Cancer was living proof of how people can help other people. On Saturday, the event put Richard and Mary Lou in their thoughts and prayers.
“As you celebrate with us this evening and reflect back on 20 years of giving, I am reminded of one of my father’s most important teachings to my brother and my sisters,” Parry said. “He always counseled us to make sure we gave back. For all of us that benefited from his message, thank you daddy.”
The event was also dedicated to Roy Messer who lost his battle with cancer. Roy was best know for the technology that is a part of the benefit and banquet. While Roy’s life journey took him in many directions, his passion for photography consumed his last years. Many of his works can be seen in the offices and hallways of the Holiday Inn.
“Roy would not like the fact that we are honoring him because Roy preferred being the quiet person who just made things work,” Parry said. “Roy, rest peacefully under the night sky you captured so vividly.”
While event attendees checked out the many baskets around the exhibit hall, the sponsors numbers had already been tallied. Sponsorship donations were $175,000 dollars. Two local companies donated $20,000. They included FMC and Premier Powerplants and Pumps. Chevron, Jonah Energy and Linn Energy each gave $10,000 and up.
Last year, the event raised $327,000 which went to assist local cancer patients.
Another favorite part of the event is dinner. This year, 35 chefs from Salt Lake, Oklahoma and Texas put together the menu.
There were also dignitaries at the event including Sen. Mike Enzi and John Barrasso as well as Wyoming Governor Matt Mead.
Mead told the audience cancer has touched all of us as he told of watching his father’s fight with cancer. He told the audience to recognize what 20 years of giving has done for so many.
“Thank you for giving us inspiration and courage,” Mead said.
Barrasso has also watched his loved ones battle the disease. He thanked Parry for her unbelievable contribution to the community.
“No one has more innovation, creativity or energy,” he said.
Barrasso said Cowboys Against Cancer is the epitome of the Code of the West. Take pride, finish what you start and ride for the brand.
“That brand is Cowboys Against Cancer and the generosity of a community,” he said.
Parry thanked 20 years of volunteers on Saturday. She also noted how far reaching the event had become as she introduced a couple who came to Rock Springs all the way from Hawaii to attend this year’s event.
She thanked Haliburton for helping get ready for the event and all the many students from Green River and Rock Springs High Schools.
Parry told a story of a recent visit by two Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint missionaries. She said as they were leaving, they asked Parry if she had any projects she needed done. As Parry chuckled, she thanked eight missionaries who brought all the flowers out to the event.
As Parry pulled out a letter from her sister Patricia, she began to read it. She was soon stopped by her sister who told the story. Patricia said she was recently in Rock Springs to be with her sister as she received an award. As she started to head back to California, she had to stop because of the weather.
Patricia explained she stopped at the McDonalds in Green River to try to find out what the road conditions were. She said there was a group of men eating as she asked them if they knew how the roads were.
As they continued to talk, the men asked her why she was in Sweetwater County. Patricia said she explained to them she was here for Cowboys Against Cancer.
With tears in her eyes, she recalled how one of the men stood up and gave her a great big hug and told her Cowboys Against Cancer saved his life. He told Patricia to hug all the volunteers of the event.
“Consider yourself hugged by a bunch of men at McDonalds,” she said.
Parry summed up the evening as she explained she has been asked numerous times about what celebrities would be at the event this year.
“As I thought to myself about this I said we don’t need celebrities,” she said. “We don’t need celebrities because you are the celebrities.”

Week 20-Rock Springs, WY

Transfer day is tomorrow. I just found out I will be staying another 6 weeks in Rock Springs, which means I will have stayed a total of 6 months in Rock Springs!  I am super excited. We have 9 people on date for baptism next transfer and possibly 5 more if things go well with the people we are teaching.  The next one is December 9 or something.

Well it has been another amazing week for me. Our weeks are packed with so many events and things that happen that it seems like we've been here a lot longer than we actually have. Weeks feel like months as far as the amount of events that happen. I will be able to send Emma off which is awesome. It will be really fun to be able to spend more time with her and the other people in my district for another transfer. Our district stayed the same for another 6 weeks, except we'll be losing Elder Kirsi. He is going home. I will really miss him. We have gotten really close. I am very excited to continue working in Rock Springs and we should be doing some "reaping" this transfer which will be amazing! Now for some experiences this week:

I spent a lot of time this week in Manilla. I went there again with Elder Vause. The other elders have really been struggling in Green River so they needed a break. I really love Manilla. It is an amazing place to be and many refer to it as God's country. When I left last time, I really didn't feel like we did much in Manilla. Although now, all they really had to work with was what Elder Vause and I did together last time. We had a goal and we prayed really hard about it. Our goal for this exchange was to help someone commit to baptism. We went through all 2 1/2 days in Manilla with no success. We were able to pick up a new investigators and teach a few lessons. We compiled a list of people who could be ready to accept the gospel and visited them. They all weren't home or it wasn't a good time. It was very slow. Anyways, we went back to Green River and we found out that one of my investigators from Rock Springs, who I knew quite well, had abruptly moved to Green River in their area. The night before Elder Hanks and Elder Vause's companion (Elder Scherf from Holland), who were in Rock Springs, had met with them and had found their address. That morning right before we switched back, we went over to meet with them and Jasmine and Patrick Blazedale committed to baptism for Nov 15! It was clearly a miracle and a response to our plea. Just how the timing and everything worked out it was definitely a miracle. God truly answers prayers.

You may remember in one of my first emails us miraculously meeting a guy whose daughter had brain surgery. He has been gone at some sort of substance rehab for 90 days.  Other family members have been gone for various occasions and events during the summer. While he and some of the children were gone during the summer, we developed and kept a good relationship with the Mom and the rest of the kids. This past Monday, we knew that he was getting back from rehab. We were very nervous because we thought he might be bitter and come back a different person. We prayed fervently that all would go well if he was back. We got there and all the kids were back as well. He has a job that has crazy hours and he was home! They all were there and that in-and-of-itself was a miracle. We caught up and talked for a while about all that had happened. They really love and appreciate us and what we do. He said that he was grateful for us looking out for his wife while he was gone and considers us like family. The most amazing thing happened later in our conversation. The mom randomly brought up her baptism many years ago. She told what an amazing experience it was for her. She said that the Spirit was there and when she received the Holy Ghost it was unlike anything else she's ever experienced. She said that she remembers it well even though it was many years ago. We invited their family to take the lessons and they accepted. I feel like this week we will see them set a date for baptism. It's amazing what can happen if you just try your best to do nothing but show the Savior's love.

We had another lesson with Edna yesterday from Guinea-Bussua.  She is truly amazing. She knows that it is true and she feels really welcome and happy at church. The entire lesson was translated into Portuguese. At the lesson was a recently baptized Guinea-Bussuan (Adriano) and the Wilson parents (who both speak Portuguese). The mom is a native from Brazil.  At one point, I said that even though I couldn't understand what they were saying I could still feel the Spirit telling me that what they were saying was true. She said that she felt the Spirit as well. THAT NEVER HAPPENS! That tells you how amazing Edna is. They are an amazing family. I felt prompted at the end of our lesson to ask Adriano to share his testimony with Edna. I felt kind of uncomfortable doing it but I proceeded anyways. He shared his testimony and even though I couldn't understand a word he was saying, we all felt the Spirit touch us and she started to cry. We asked her if she had been reading. She said she had a very stressful week. She opened up and told us that she is recently married (as of a month ago) and before they were married her husband had told her that he had a little addiction. She brushed it off and thought that he was joking or something. Anyways, turns out he wasn't joking and he is actually an alcoholic. He had begun to get abusive and so the police were at their house and she moved places. The Wilsons' told us they told her that all the strength she needs can be found in the Book of Mormon. All in all, it was a great lesson.

Last story whew... Elder Hanks and I gave short talks in sacrament along with one of our Ward Mission Leaders. He is actually my favorite. In his talk, he talked about the pioneers a little bit and he talked about the rescuers who were sent to help the Martin handcart company who were stuck in WY and other places very similar on their trek West. He said that Elder Hanks is a direct descendant of Ephraim Hanks and that I was a direct descendant of Thomas E Ricks, both of whom were rescuers for the Martin Handcart Company. And that we, like our forefathers, were sent to rescue people in a very real way in WY as well. The Spirit filled the room and I came to the realization that I knew one the reasons I was sent here. He also said that the veil was a lot thinner than we realize and the people we come in contact with may very well have been friends from before. He put it into the perspective of that if we hadn't forgotten, we would be pained that they didn't have the gospel in their lives. We taught a lesson later in another ward. It was about prophets. I asked the class what does it mean to sustain church officers. The Elders Quorum President said that it was like Ephraim Hanks and others did in the movie, "17 Miracles". They were asked to go rescue and they went. The Spirit filled the room. I told them about our ancestors and I said at times I felt like he (Thomas E Ricks) was helping me with my work. The Elders Quorum President said that his ancestors come from some those who were rescued. It was a very neat experience. This week, I really have come to realize there are many reasons why I have been called to this mission.

I love you all and appreciate your support. It means the world.

-Elder Bass

Later Notes: That Sunday we taught gospel principles. We had great support from the ward. The ward participated in the discussion. One man in particular (pres. king) talked about how some of his ancestors were rescued.

At this party we ran the apple-bobbing station. At the very end i tried to get an apple. I eventually got one. In the picture my hair was wet because of that.
Ward party: we ran a bobbing for apples station. I got one finally. Also I probably contracted a few illnesses from all the kids regurgitating the water as they tried to get the apple

I said my goodbyes to Vicki and Evan last night because I thought I was going to get transferred. I didn't soooo..... awkward....
